Tallow Skincare FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Tallow Skincare

New to tallow skincare? You're in the right place. Here are answers to the most common questions we get about our products and ingredients.

What is tallow and where does it come from?

Tallow is rendered beef fat, sourced from the suet (kidney fat) of cattle. Our tallow comes exclusively from 100% grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle on regenerative farms in the USA. It is rendered slowly at low temperatures to preserve its full nutrient profile, then whipped or blended into our skincare products.

Is tallow skincare safe?

Yes — tallow is one of the safest skincare ingredients available. It contains no synthetic chemicals, preservatives, or artificial fragrances. All of our products are non-toxic and baby safe. In fact, tallow has been used as a skin remedy for thousands of years across many cultures.

Will tallow clog my pores?

No. Tallow is non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog pores. Its fat composition closely mirrors the sebum our skin naturally produces, so it absorbs deeply and works with your skin's natural oil balance rather than against it. Many customers with acne-prone skin actually find their skin improves after switching to tallow.

Can I use tallow on my face?

Absolutely. Tallow is excellent for facial use — as a daily moisturizer, night cream, or eye area treatment. Use a pea-sized amount warmed between your fingertips and apply to clean, slightly damp skin. A little goes a long way.

Is tallow skincare good for sensitive skin?

Yes — tallow is one of the best options for sensitive skin. Because it's biocompatible with human skin and free from synthetic additives, it rarely causes reactions. It's particularly popular among people with eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, and other skin sensitivities who have struggled to find products that don't irritate their skin.

Is it safe for babies?

Yes, all of our tallow products are completely baby safe. Tallow is gentle, non-toxic, and free from any ingredients that could harm a baby's delicate skin. Many parents use our Whipped Tallow or Body Balm for diaper rash, dry patches, and general baby skincare.

Does tallow smell bad?

Our tallow is carefully rendered and deodorized, so it has a very mild, neutral scent — not the strong smell you might associate with cooking fat. Our Whipped Tallow is completely unscented. If you prefer a light natural fragrance, our Whipped Vanilla is infused with organic vanilla for a subtle, warm scent.

What makes grass-fed tallow better than conventional tallow?

Grass-fed cattle produce fat that is significantly richer in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E & K) and beneficial fatty acids like CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) compared to grain-fed cattle. These nutrients are what make tallow so effective as a skin moisturizer. Grass-fed tallow also supports regenerative farming practices that are better for the environment and animal welfare.

How much product should I use?

Much less than you think! Tallow is highly concentrated. A pea-sized amount covers your entire face; a small fingertip scoop is enough for most of your body. Warm it between your palms first to melt it, then apply to clean, slightly damp skin. If your skin feels greasy after a few minutes, you've used too much — just use less next time.

What is your Sun Balm's SPF?

Our Sun Balm uses non-nano zinc oxide, a physical mineral UV filter that provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. We recommend reapplying every 2 hours or after swimming and sweating, as with any mineral sunscreen. It is reef safe, baby safe, and contains no chemical UV filters.

What is transdermal magnesium and does it actually work?

Transdermal magnesium is magnesium applied directly to the skin, where it can be absorbed into the body without going through the digestive system. Our Magnesium Balm uses genuine Zechstein seabed magnesium chloride — one of the purest sources on earth — in a grass-fed tallow base that supports deep absorption. Many customers report improved sleep, reduced muscle soreness, and less stress with consistent use.

Are your products made in the USA?

Yes. All Sacred Tallow products are handcrafted in the USA using ingredients sourced from regenerative farms in the United States.

How should I store my tallow products?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Tallow is naturally shelf-stable and does not require refrigeration. In warm weather, your balm may soften — this is normal and doesn't affect quality. Simply store in a cooler spot or refrigerate briefly to firm it back up.

What is regenerative skincare?

Regenerative skincare refers to products made from ingredients sourced through regenerative agriculture — farming practices that restore soil health, support biodiversity, and improve animal welfare rather than depleting natural resources. By choosing Sacred Tallow, you're supporting farms that are actively working to heal the land. That's beauty with a purpose.
